Warbirds, Transport and Beer

Back to New Zealand
Colin was kind enough to drop us off at Wanaka Airport which has several interesting sites.

Our first stop was the Transport Museum which houses a large collection of vehicles (planes, boats, cars, trucks and even a tank!) along with loads of toys. Dave and I had a field day spotting which toys we used to play with. After that we had a break with a tour around the Wanaka Beerworks - a small brewery with its biggest customer being those in Wanaka. Finally we checked out the Warbirds museum.

Wanaka Airport is host every two years to a huge airshow that draws in the crowds like no-bodies business, with the warbirds in the museum often the highlight of the show when they re-enact various scenarios. Colin has been booked out almost a year ahead for this event, which unfortunately does not take place till March so we will miss it.

A nice little Austin! Cannot remember what the model was though, beach-something I am sure.

Quite a nice car this one, not seen one before and I really like the lines (not a patch on my bug though, of course). The headlights are quite funky with the third one in the middle like that, very sports like

Now rumour has it that someone has a BSA bike tucked away in their garage, not like this one by any chance is it?

The museum had an older one, dated at 1926, which had one of those much flatter tanks on it and came with a tool box and everything! I also saw an Indian make of bike, rated at 750cc, which was geared up for use on the battle field.

And an old fire truck caught my attention (thats not Fireman Dingle trying to get behind the wheel is it?).

There were quite a few fire trucks knocking about the place, including two nabbed from Japan. The ladders on these were pretty impressive and it was interesting as the the equipment was labelled in both English and Japanese

Ahh the Spitfire down at the Warbirds museum.

Nice to see one of these close up knowing that it is still being flown! We did not have too long at the museum, which is totally dedicated to fighter planes and the NZ pilots who flew in them, but they had some nice individual stories. Some of these were accompanied by superb paintings.

For a small fortune you can fly for 20 minutes in a lovely P-51D Mustang (£550!!).

This is a good little one.

Not flying at the moment (thats its engine in front) but they do plan to get it up and running. In fact the engine looks way to big to actually squeeze into the fuselage! The tail you can see behind the nose is from a Hurricane, it makes this Vampire look really small in comparison.

BEER!

We were walked through the brewing process, got to taste the different malts and finally got a sample of the finished product (ok, ok, we had a whole glass).

Being a very small outfit they were well geared up for recycling (customers dropping back bottles are usually offered a swift half) and they use no chemicals or other additives.

Oh and the beers not bad either :-)
