Billed as a celebration for mountain and snow fanatics, people came from all over the world to enjoy the music, competitions and demos. There were big air, half pipe and slopestyle competitions, daily 'jam' sessions in the village square for skate boarders and bladers, a dog parade, bike demos, snowmobile jam session and a photography competition too! With a bands playing daily there was always something to look at or listen to, which was handy as this was the time when both Dave and I were out of action for a while.
I have done two short animated sequences of the bikers and skaters using my camera. Check them out by clicking on the moving images link, they total 175k and may take a minute to play if you are on a modem.
Ahhhhh the Big Air competition for snowboarders. Note there is no snowboarder in this picture! Because of where we were standing I could not get a very good shot of a boarder when they took off - the trees at the top kind of blended in with their dark clothing. Not that you would of seen them anyway, an optical zoom would be handy! At least you get an idea of the size of the jump. This is just the landing zone, the take off ramp you can just see peeking over at the lip of the hill and would be set some distance back. |

I spent a few hours watching the skate boarders do their thing on the ramps. The commentator had a hard time getting the crowd cheering, which in turn meant the skaters were not so 'stoked' and 'up' for the big tricks. However they had their moments and the inline skaters were impressive performing some forward flips and 360's. There are very few girls in this sport, I only saw two on the ramps - so get going ladies, quit your job and give it a bash! |
Caught these guys practicing for their next show. Mountain Bikes are big in Whistler during the summer when the ski lifts carry them and their bikes up so they can ride down the same slopes me and Dave have been snowboarding on! The team were showing off skills by hopping between wooden items (representing rocks and boulders I guess) and dropping from the roof of the team van to the ground. |

The last concert of the event gave us the chance to see Spearhead live. I had not heard of Michael Franti but Dave has a couple of his CD's. Although I did not see all of the bands play, this seemed to be an anticipated appearance for the small crowd that gathered, and we all joined in with a little boogie. It was raining throughout the concert, but well worth seeing a good live band. |

Fire! Entertainment (or the 'freaks' as Mr. Franti put it) during the concert consisted of a fire breather to keep us warm, two cherub types and an assortment of other weird people dressed up and willing to strut their stuff. |
